The name Tokushuhamonoko, or special blade steel, refers to the combination of carbon, chrome and fine tungsten used in the production of these versatile, durable and highly functional planes. Though a bit harder to sharpen than blue steel, Tokushuhamonoko blades are noted for their ability to hold an edge longer even when used with a wide variety of hard and soft woods.

With Fuso, Kacho Fugetsu and Sanshi Suimei in particular, the blacksmith has a simple system: much in the same way that lumber is graded, Yamamoto assesses each blade for quality only after the forging process is complete. Therefore, he reserves the name Fuso for only the finest quality (based on his trained eye), followed by Kacho Fugetsu and Sanshi Suimei. Naturally, however, it should be mentioned that NO blades leave his foundry unless it meets his high personal standards for quality and function. The quality of chip brakers and blocks are different and based on the quality of the blades.

For questions concerning our Tokushuhamonoko planes or any other products, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone or email.
