I bought this plane as a general purpose, do all plane mainly targeting softwoods and the easier to work European hardwoods (tulip, cherry etc). This blade was ordered with a dai angle of 39deg. However, the performance of the plane is exceptional on ALL hardwoods that I have tried. As a real unfair test I even planed European Oak AGAINST the grain. Amazingly it still managed to deal with this no problem. As is expected the blade can be set with micron precision and the resulting finish is stunning. The workmanship is first class from both the blacksmith, Yamamoto and the dai maker, Inomoto. The blade is finished very neatly with a perfectly formed ura on the back. The hard steel is very thin and backed with good quality softer iron. Visible metal fold lines and plenty of dark flecks indicating the use of good quality soft iron. The dai was cut from a very large tree which makes the dai very stable. The opening for the blade was clearly undertaken by a master with good surface contact between the blade and the dai. After 3 months acclimatisation the dai only needed minimal adjustments before the plane was ready to use. The purchasing experience was a delight with Susuki tools helping me every step of the way...in selection, ordering, prompt shipping and setup advice. Susuki tools truly is a valuable connection to buying quality Japanese tools.
